88% compliance with mandatory masks on public transport in Latvia

According to inspections carried out by Rīga municipal transport company Rīgas satiksme (RS), day one of compulsory facemasks on public transport met with a compliance rate of 88%.

In a release on October 8, one day after masks became a requirement, RS said: “On the first day, mouth and nose masks were used on public transport by about 88% of passengers, for which we thank these passengers very much.”

On October 7, RS ticket inspectors performed 879 inspections of public transport vehicles. During inspections, ticket controllers reminded passengers about the use of masks and checked that passengers had purchased and checked in for their journeys.

As  prevously reported by LSM  , from October 7, passengers on trams, trolleybuses and buses must use a mouth and nose mask, thus minimizing the risks of COVID-19 spread. In case the passengers do not have a mouth and nose cover, the controllers will ask that you put one on. Passengers can also be asked to get off public transport for not using mouth/nose coverings which must be used by all passengers except children under 13 years of age and those unable to do so for medical reasons.

“Reducing the risk of COVID-19 spreading requires the involvement of everyone, so it is important that citizens have as little social contact as possible and use public transport only when there is no other alternative,” said RS.
