No dancing in October in Latvia

In October, there will be no dance events in restaurants, bars and clubs, the Minister for Health Ilze Viņķele said in an interview to Latvian Television October 8.

The politician explained that she had agreed on this condition with the industry association. Its members are determined to only organize events where people sit. These can be concerts, hangouts – events without active movement.

“Today I had a conversation with caterers. In fact, the government still needs to accept this starting next week, but we agreed and the sector is very forthcoming – dancing does not take place for three weeks in bars, restaurants, clubs,” the Minister said.

Viņķele said she believed more in public awareness than in punishments.

At the moment, there is no talk of limiting working time for bars and restaurants. It will only be done if there is a need.

Vinkele also said she would emphasize in a conversation with Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš that every limit, when it is introduced, should be backed with compensatory mechanism for people who are affected, who lose their income.

“If we close schools or nursery schools, people stay at home with children Without compensating it, the consequences can be as dramatic as the spread of the virus,” the politician said.
